Most of our patients know that it’s best to brush your teeth at least twice a day, preferably after meals. However, they often don’t know exactly what to do to ensure that their daily brushings are able to best fight off dental decay and gum disease. Here are some of our best brushing tips.

How Long to Brush

Brushing your teeth correctly will take you a minimum of two minutes. Our Atlanta teeth whitening specialists find that the best way to ensure that you take this long is to listen to a favorite song or use a timer while you are brushing.

Advanced Technique

In addition to brushing for a full two minutes, you should use a good technique while you brush. Most children are taught to brush in up and down strokes, and they never really advance from that technique.

Our dentists in Atlanta recommend that you instead use short, gentle strokes that massage your teeth and gums. Try to move in a circular motion, as this will get the most plaque off. Pay extra attention to your gum line, back teeth and the surfaces you use to chew.

For extra points, we strongly encourage you to brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth as well. Brushing these areas helps to remove the bacteria that cause bad breath.

Picking Your Tools

You will also need the right tools to brush your teeth properly. We like for our patients to use electric toothbrushes if they can, as these automatically move in a circular motion, but if you don’t care for electric brushes, we recommend using a soft-bristled brush with a small head.

Your toothpaste will depend largely on what your individual needs are. Some of our patients have sensitive teeth, some don’t like mint flavors and others want something with a whitening boost. If you aren’t sure where to start looking, talk with your Atlanta cosmetic dentist. They’ll be able to advise you based on your dental needs and preferences.
