In a recent Reader’s Digest Feature article, an investigative reporter embarked on a nationwide journey to assess the fairness and consistency of American Dentistry. The results were truly astonishing. It’s not all that easy to find a dentist who’s good and who won’t overcharge you.

He started out with a problem molar which his personal dentist thought should be crowned for less than $500. This opinion was seconded by a chosen panel of other dentists which included an expert working for the government and a former dean of Dentistry who has already received a Distinguished Service Award from the American Dental Association.

The 3 Factors You Must Consider

If you are looking for a dentist who won’t rip you off, it won’t be quick and easy. It can even be awkward. But it’s important nonetheless. So here’s how to find a dentist that won’t leave you feeling cheated:

  1. Compare the costs. Go online and check Google for a calculator that computes dental costs. That will give you an average cost figure for common services and operations, plus an idea of the upper prices for that service.
Then it’s time to do some comparison shopping. Start online and see if the dentist’s website lists down their prices. You can contact them too and you can ask how much common services (cleaning and exam, fluoride treatments for your kids, and X-rays) will cost. If the info isn’t listed, then call up the dental offices in your area.
If some dentists charge much more than others, ask them why. This isn’t a rude question—nowadays every dentist should expect it.
  2. How skilled are they? If you’re paying good money for a service, then it stands to reason that you ought to get good service. But that’s not always the case. For example, a crown usually comes with a guarantee for five to seven years. And if a dentist doesn’t offer a guarantee for this long, then something’s not right.
As part of your comparison shopping, you can also get a second opinion on your new dentist to see if they’re doing things right.
  3. How do you feel? Your feelings are also important, and it’s understandable if you don’t mind paying a bit more for a dentist that can really make you feel relaxed and safe.

And in the meantime, make sure you take care of your oral hygiene religiously. You know what they say, an ounce of prevention is better than cure.
