Crowns are tooth-shaped caps used to cover compromised teeth that are beyond the saving of a dental filling procedure. These prostheses are also ideal for teeth that need aesthetic improvement and have recently been treated with a root canal treatment. And for many years now, dental crowns have proven themselves to be beneficial.

Traditional crowns help strengthen damaged teeth but availing it can be time-consuming. Luckily, with CEREC technology, crowns can now be placed in just one appointment! How is this possible? We at Downtown Atlanta Dentistry prepared some information everyone should know about CEREC crowns. Continue reading below.

What is a CEREC Crown?

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. This dental technology utilizes CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) to fabricate a natural-looking dental crown in just one sitting.

The Processes Involved

After the initial crown preparation, here are the other things dental professionals perform:

  • First, an intraoral scanner will be used to take photos of the teeth; then a digital impression will be created.
  • The impression taken will be sent to the CAD/CAM software machine which creates a digital tooth restoration.
  • Once finished, the restoration will then be sent to a milling machine to create the physical crown out of a ceramic block. It takes approximately 15 minutes for this process to finish.
  • Lastly, the dentist will polish and shade-match the completed crown, then cement it to the tooth.

The Benefits CEREC Crowns Offer

CEREC crowns look and feel like real teeth. To make this possible, the ceramic material used is matched with the patient’s tooth color. With the help of 3D imaging technology, CEREC crowns are made to fit a person’s bite and gum line accurately. Plus, the process is typically more comfortable and easier for patients to squeeze in their busy schedules. With good oral hygiene, CEREC crowns have been proven to last between five to fifteen years just like traditional crowns.
